Yo...I've heard this song but never paid any attention to the lyrics because once I heard the hook and knew what the content was about I just zoned out and let it slip into the "no real substance" category. Not to seem holier than thou, I rap and have songs that also have little to no substance, but I acknowledge them as that, and I also have a plethora of songs that do have some substance. But, I digress. In a nutshell, Kanye has the best verse. On the surface the big biology words, his purposeful broken english (i.e. "toastes") and his playful style make those without a keen ear think he's just talking about nothing (not in the consciousness-raising sense, but literally) but the things he's saying all actually make sense in some fashion.
ReplyDeleteReferring to getting head as "Skulliosis" is kinda funny, getting head while sleep being likened to osmosis is kinda funny too. The line of the song to me is in Common's verse though, when he said "but they say, 'you be on that conscious tip' get your head right and get up on this conscious dick..." frickin hilarious. Probably becasue I'm a conscious Black man who has had women change who they are because of who they think I am, and this line would have come in handy in many instances. Kid Cudi didn't move me at all on this one.
